And in the middle of the lake the woman I'd spoken with floated on her back, eyes closed, as if nothing in her many years had ever gone wrong.

About This Quote

The woman in this short story, Isabel Allende, was infatuated with the idea of love. She seemed to be blissfully unaware of the many people who had come and gone over the years. Her blissful state was interrupted only when that young man noticed her, but she seemed to believe that everything was perfect. However, it took a visit to her by her psychiatrist to really bring her face-to-face with the reality of life outside of her little bubble.

The young man in this story represents our hubris. We are so sure of ourselves that we cannot conceive that others don’t think as we do or feel as we do.
